Study Human Nutrition

Background Required

Students intending to study Human Nutrition are strongly recommended to have studied the equivalent of Chemistry to Year 13 level.  Biology, Mathematics with Statistics, and English to Year 12, preferably Year 13 level.

Undergraduate Degrees you can enrol in:

BSc                   Majoring in Human Nutrition

An undergraduate degree consists of 360 point of which 180 points must be above 100-level and of that 72 points must be above 200-level. A BSc majoring in human nutrition would typically include the following papers:

*Major subject requirement.  +Highly recommended.

To progress to postgraduate study in Human Nutrition e.g. a Postgraduate Diploma in Science, BSc(Hons) or a two-year Master of Science degree it is important students also included in their undergraduate degree the highly recommended papers listed above.

How will I study?

Your classes will consist of lectures, tutorials, seminars, self-directed learning, practical laboratories, group work and journal discourse. One of the great things about studying human nutrition is that you learn a lot about your own food choices and eating practices.

In both second and third year you will be a human guinea pig by participating in dietary interventions and find out how your body responds to different foods and meals. You will also learn about how nutrients affect human health and how deficiency or excess might lead to disease. If you take the food service papers, you will plan a meal then oversee the cooking and serving of this meal to over 100 residential college students.

Assessment is a combination of tests, assignments, reports, scientific articles and presentations done individually and in groups. Staff in the department are renowned for being helpful and friendly and they like to give and get plenty of student feedback.

Bachelor of Applied Science in Sport and Exercise Nutrition

Sport and Exercise Nutrition is a rapidly growing area that requires combined knowledge of exercise science and human nutrition and is now a recognized sport science both nationally and internationally.  Sport and exercise nutrition looks at how sport, exercise and food affect health and human performance, and how nutrition affects sports performance.

The major subject requirements for the BAppSc in Sport and Exercise Nutrition can be found at the following website: BAppSc. Students who are interested in becoming dietitians and working in the area of sports nutrition are able to complete the requirements to be eligible to apply for entry into the Master of Dietetics by including both minors in Supplementary Nutritional Science and Food Service Management in their BAppSc degree.  It takes a minimum of 3.5 years to complete this qualification.
